Western Colorado Entrepreneur Makes More than a Decimal Point
Big Red – The Official Calculator of the National Debt Computes How Much We Owe, and You Can Add $2.4 Billion A Day To Stay Current
MONTROSE, Colo. – When Montrose businessman Matt Miles was trying to find a calculator that would compute the fiscal deficit and the national debt, he was alarmed to find that all of the calculators he had ever used were now obsolete. So he created his own 16-digit calculator, big enough to look at our current debt and plug in the $2.4 billion* we add to it each day.
That’s when Miles came up with the idea of offering Big Red – The Official Calculator of the National Debt to the public (www.bigredcalculator.com). This week Miles rolls out Big Red with the official launch of bigredcalculator.com, and offering the calculator for sale through Amazon. In addition to displaying 16 digits, Big Red offers tax, memory, mark up, rounding and many other features.
“We hear people talking about deficit spending and the national debt – the amount our children will owe if we don’t do something about it – and it seems scary but somewhat distant,” Miles said. “But when you actually look at the number and realize just how big it is, it makes you sit up and really want to do something about it.
“It really hit home for me just how much we’re in a hole,” Miles says. “It dwarfs any number I had ever entered into a calculator. I wanted everyone to look at it this way, so all of us would be just as concerned about what we are doing to our children’s future if we don’t act,” he says.
But it’s much more than just decimal points. It’s about making a point. “We all have a responsibility to do something about the deficit spending that is going on in Washington and its effect on our national debt. I’ve gone so far as to create this calculator to help others get the point, and I hope others will share this point, too, by joining me in asking our elected officials to do something about deficit spending and the national debt,” Miles said. “I hope people will give the calculator to their friends who also need to see just how large these numbers really are.”
